How a Memphis ghost tour works

  1. 1

    Pick your night

Ghost tours run after dark and the good ones sell out on weekends. Check the widget above for what is actually running while you are in Memphis.

  2. 2

    Book with free cancellation

Most of these can be cancelled up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing and holding out costs you the good guide.

  3. 3

    Turn up where they say

This one meets at Meet your tour guide at the activity provider's, Backbeat Tours, ticket podium located on the downstairs patio at Alfred's. If you are arriving by car, there are four different parking garages within a few blocks of the meeting point, and several open-air parking lots. The closest garage to the location, just two blocks away, is at 149 Peabody Place between Second Street and BB King Blvd., next to the Hampton Inn. You can try your luck with on-street metered parking, too, on Second Street just south of Beale; on Beale between Front and Second; or along Peabody Place from Front to Fourth Street.

  4. 4

    Wear the right shoes

You will be walking on old, uneven, badly lit ground for an hour or more. It is the advice every operator gives and most visitors ignore.

Every other Memphis ghost tour

Ordered by review depth. The strip on each card shows where that price sits across 208 ghost tours nationally.

Fever, the river, and 1968

Heavier material than the format usually carries

Yellow fever, the river trade and the civil rights era, told by somebody.

The tone matters more than the route

The events that make Memphis a ghost-tour city are real epidemics and real atrocities, some within living memory of the buildings involved. A good guide handles that as history. A bad one turns it into entertainment. Check reviews for which you are getting - more carefully here than anywhere else on this site.

Who it is actually for

Somebody already interested in the city rather than in ghosts. The format is the delivery mechanism in Memphis, not the appeal, and visitors who arrive wanting a fright tend to leave disappointed.

A small field

There is not much bookable here. That is worth knowing before you plan an evening around it, and it is why review depth on the cards matters more than any ranking we could write. Memphis also concentrates its visitors on Beale Street and Graceland, so a ghost tour competes with two of the strongest draws in American music tourism. If you have one evening, be honest about whether this is how you want to spend it.

What a night here actually costs

Memphis's 2 bookable tours start at $29.63 and run to $40.61, against a national ghost-tour median of $30 measured across 208 products. That puts Memphis squarely in the typical band. The middle half of all ghost tours runs $25 to $39.25, this city sits inside it, and price is therefore not the variable worth optimising here. With only 2 products there is no comparison to make, and the review depth on the card is the only signal worth reading. Treat a thin sample as unproven rather than poor. This was an awesome tour. Our guide was very friendly and knew the key data and tips extremely well . This tour gave us a good introduction to Memphis so that we could plan the next couple of days based on the information gained. Great value for money and a huge bonus of a free beer to wander the streets of Memphis. The rain made us feel right at home as its a very wet winter here in NZ ATM. Great value and a awesome time overall . Steve & Tammy from New Zealand
